Demolition in Barking
The estate consisted of 17 high-rise blocks and low-level three-story blocks. In the early 21st Century, the Council spent a lot of money trying to improve the estate alongside the town centre regeneration.
However, the best solution was for the entire site to be demolished and redeveloped, starting with its east side before moving onto the west side.
In May 2018, Barking and Dagenham’s Council’s regeneration company Be First announced plans to the next phases of the Gascoigne East rebuild.
At the end of the regeneration, there will be around three thousand homes. Most of these will still be available for affordable rent or shared ownership.
Downwell’s involvement in the regeneration of the Gascoigne Estate
The Downwell Group was appointed in 2019 by main contractor Wates to carry out their phase of Demolition in Barking works at Gascoigne West. This included:
• Environmental Cleaning
• Asbestos Removal
• Scaffolding protection works.
The success of this work has led to being appointed by Wates for Phase 2 for similar works.
We have also secured Phase 3a for Willmott Dixon.
Social value
We have donated some Hi-vis vests for Gascoigne School and will be setting our Demolition Challenge for some of the pupils in September. The vests will be worn by the children on school trips.
Some of the materials from the buildings have been used to create tables, planters, and fencing at the Community garden. The garden will be used by pupils and the local residents where they will be allowed to plant vegetables and plants. It will also act as a meeting place.
