Global: Ailsa Wharf sits aside the River Lea in Bow, on a site that was formerly made up of industrial buildings, however these had previously been demolished, down to slab level, by others. The industrial heritage of the site had resulted in a number of legacy issues, most especially hazardous materials/liquids that had seeped into the soils.
Specific: Invasive plant removal, Asbestos survey, Asbestos Removal, Demolition Soil, Remediation
Challenges: Contaminated Soil – The aforementioned industrial heritage of the site, and more so the uncontrolled usage, and proper disposal, of liquids associated with the manufacturing processes, had led to the soils being heavily contaminated, this problem was further exacerbated by the close proximity of the adjacent river, and the Environment Agency’s requirements to ensure that the water course did not become contaminated whilst the works were in progress. Using a number of remediation techniques the soils were appropriately cleaned, and/or exported from site for controlled disposal at a licensed facility.
