Global: The Gascoigne Estate is a large social housing complex located in Barking, consisting of low, mid, and high-rise properties, and its redevelopment forms part of the local council’s strategy to deliver 21st century urban living neighbourhoods.
Specific: Downwell secured the demolition package for Phase 2 of the works, requiring the demolition of a number of three-story blocks. Ahead of commencing the demolition works we undertook the removal of Pigeon Guano, and the removal of both licensed and non-licensed asbestos containing materials. Once the buildings had been re mediated of all hazardous materials the demolition works commenced using 30 tonne machines and utilising the long- reach method.
Challenges: Social Value compliance – Mindful of our commitment to the client’s Social Value charter we engaged with the local community to offer support and education opportunities. Support was given through a commitment to the local food-bank, the donation of Hi-Vis vests to a local school for use on school trips, and the donation of project arisings to local good causes. Education was provided to a local school through the Downwell Demolition Challenge, a game that’s teaches children the importance of recycling. NB: this initiative has since been rolled-out to a number a schools within the communities that we are working, and always to great success.
