Global: Holloway Prison (built between 1971 and 1985) was designed to provide better facilities for the treatment of women in prison. This Ministry of Justice finally closed in 2016 as part of the Prison Estate Transformation Programme, and the site is now being developed, in conjunction social housing provider Peabody, to provide both social and private housing.
Specific: Demolition of all low and medium height structures that made up the Prison, inclusive of all asbestos and hazmat removal.
Challenges:
Bats – Roosting Bats were observed around the site and in accordance with the client Ecology Plan we engaged with the Islington Council Ecology Team to put in place appropriate measures to ensure that our strip-out/demolition/asbestos removal activities could commence in a manner that did not harm/disturb the bats; these measures included:-
- An ongoing watching brief on the affected buildings to ensure all bats had left the known areas.
- The installation of bat boxes within the trees that surrounded the site to enable a safe haven should any bats still be onsite.
- Regular dialogue with the ecology team
- Regular updates to the clients Sustainability Manager
